General Manager of Operations – Custom Solar & Battery Installation
Full-Time | On-Site | Los Angeles, CA
Compensation: DOE, commensurate with experience
About Blue Sky Energy
Blue Sky Energy is a solar, battery, and EV installation company serving high-end residential, retrofit, new construction, and select commercial clients across Los Angeles.
Founded in 2006, we specialize in custom solar PV systems, Tesla Powerwall 3, Enphase, EV charging, SPAN panels, and smart energy solutions for projects that require craftsmanship, technical precision, and strong client communication.
We are not a high-volume, cookie-cutter solar company. We do detailed, custom, craftsman-style installations where every project has unique site conditions, client expectations, design considerations, and technical requirements.
The Role
We are looking for an experienced General Manager to oversee operations, support our Project Managers, protect installation quality, and help remove bottlenecks across the company — especially in bidding, estimating, project scoping, quality control, troubleshooting, and client communication.
This role requires strong construction experience. The General Manager must be able to evaluate the quality of work in the field, identify problems before they become expensive, troubleshoot independently, and help improve the systems and processes that keep our projects moving.
The PMs lead the crews. The General Manager leads the operating system around the PMs: project quality, accountability, client-facing escalation, troubleshooting, process improvement, and operational consistency.
The right candidate understands that high-end solar and battery installation is not “blow and go.” Our work requires precision, planning, documentation, judgment, and excellent communication with discerning clientele.
What You’ll Own
- Oversee Project Managers and ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to Blue Sky Energy quality standards.
- Support PMs without replacing their role as crew leaders.
- Evaluate field quality, workmanship, installation standards, and job site execution.
- Independently troubleshoot project issues, construction challenges, client concerns, and operational bottlenecks.
- Improve the speed, accuracy, and consistency of bids, estimates, scopes of work, and project handoffs.
- Help reduce leadership bottlenecks by taking ownership of detailed bid review, project planning, and operational decision-making.
- Review custom project requirements, site conditions, labor assumptions, material needs, access issues, electrical considerations, and installation complexity.
- Ensure bids reflect the real scope of work, not a generic template.
- Manage client-facing escalations with calm, professionalism, and excellent “bedside manner.”
- De-escalate problems with homeowners, GCs, vendors, inspectors, and internal team members.
- Participate actively in process and systems improvement, including SOPs, Asana workflows, documentation standards, and handoff procedures.
- Manage company-wide project flow from sales handoff through design, permitting, procurement, installation, inspection, interconnection, and closeout.
- Lead weekly project reviews and hold PMs accountable for schedules, budgets, documentation, client updates, and next steps.
- Monitor active project timelines, crew capacity, procurement needs, inspection dates, change orders, and risk points.
- Support PMs with complex client, GC, vendor, permitting, inspection, and field issues.
- Ensure every project has clear ownership, deadlines, task assignments, and accurate status updates in Asana.
- Coordinate with leadership on hiring, staffing needs, crew performance, vendor performance, and operational priorities.
- Enforce safety, OSHA compliance, code compliance, and Blue Sky Energy field standards.
- Build a culture of accountability, follow-through, communication, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement.
What We’re Looking For
- 7+ years of construction, operations, project management, solar, electrical, or renewable energy experience preferred.
- Strong construction experience required, with the ability to evaluate field quality and workmanship.
- 3+ years managing Project Managers, field teams, operations teams, or construction crews required.
- Strong experience with detailed bidding, estimating, scopes of work, proposal review, job costing, change orders, and budget tracking.
- Experience with custom residential, high-end construction, retrofit work, or complex site-specific installations strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of solar PV, battery storage, EV charging, residential electrical work, permitting, inspections, utility interconnection, and job site execution.
- Ability to independently troubleshoot construction, operational, client, and field issues.
- Ability to review a project and identify hidden complexity, missing scope, labor risks, access issues, material needs, quality concerns, and cost exposure before work begins.
- Excellent client-facing communication skills, especially with high-end residential clients and discerning homeowners.
- Strong de-escalation skills and the ability to remain calm, professional, and solution-focused under pressure.
- Experience improving systems, SOPs, workflows, documentation, and internal processes.
- Ability to oversee multiple active projects at once without losing track of details.
- Proven ability to lead managers, resolve conflicts, and hold teams accountable without micromanaging.
- Comfortable using Asana or similar project management software as a daily operating system.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, QuickBooks Time, or similar business tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and ability to visit job sites across Los Angeles.
Physical Requirements
This is an active, field-facing leadership role. You must be able to travel to job sites, walk active construction areas, climb ladders when needed, access rooftops for inspections or quality checks, and work outdoors in variable conditions.
Reasonable accommodation will be provided for qualified individuals with disabilities in accordance with California law and the ADA.
Who Thrives Here
You’ll do well here if you are organized, direct, technically curious, calm under pressure, and able to see both the big operational picture and the field-level details.
Our best General Manager understands that custom work requires judgment. They do not force every project into the same box. They ask the right questions, catch missing scope early, evaluate the quality of the work, protect the team from preventable surprises, and make sure the bid, plan, schedule, crew, materials, and client expectations all match before work begins.
This person can walk onto a job site, see what is working and what is not, communicate clearly with the PM, de-escalate a concerned client, and help the team move forward without creating confusion about who leads the crew.
This role is for someone who can help Blue Sky Energy scale without becoming a production-line solar company. We need a leader who values craftsmanship, accuracy, accountability, client trust, and operational discipline as much as speed.
